2008 Coins
A Review of 2008 Coins
2008 was a tumultuous year for United States coin collectors. The United States Mint had a schedule packed with product offerings, which was complicated due to a particularly volatile precious metals market.
In January 2008, the US Mint began a three coin commemorative program featuring the Bald Eagle. The program included a gold coin, silver coin, and clad coin, each offered in uncirculated or proof versions. This was the only Commemorative Coin Program for the year. While sales were brisk, none of the individual coins reached its maximum authorized mintage.
Programs began in 2007 entered their second year. The Presidential Dollar series continued with the second four coins in the series to honor James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, and Martin Van Buren. The First Spouse Gold series also entered its second year with coins for Elizabeth Monroe, Louisa Adams, Andrew Jackson's Liberty, and Martin Van Buren's Liberty. For a variety of reasons, interest in each of the series experienced a retreat.
The US Mint's collectible bullion coin products featuring the Gold Eagle, Platinum Eagle, and Gold Buffalo were plagued by high premiums and lengthy suspensions caused by volatile precious metals prices. The coins experienced renewed interest towards the end of the year, particularly after the announcement that many of the fractional coin offerings would be discontinued. The 2008 Proof Silver Eagles sold out early in the year never to return, creating a perceived rarity.
The year 2008 also marked the conclusion of the popular 50 State Quarters Program. The program credited with reinvigorating the hobby of coin collecting had a strong finish with well received designs for the last five states to join the Union. After ten years, each state had been honored with a uniquely designed quarter.
