    Welcome back to Coin Update!

    Precious metals continue to dominate headlines, but there have been many other interesting developments in the wide world of coins! A look at the ubiquitous US coin mottoes, stories related to NGC and NCS, the King of Coins goes on sale, and a look at some new commemorative coins from around the world. And notable auctions! On to the links…

    Precious metals prices continue to march higher. Here are a few reasons why gold may have not yet reached its peak.

    Ten Gold Integers to think about.

    As a follow up to yesterday’s story about New Jersey Middle School students who received detention for spending pennies, the detentions have been rescinded.

    You’ve seen the mottoes In God We Trust and E Pluribus Unum on US coin designs all your life. Do you know the story behind the mottoes?

    NGC has designed a new custom holder to house 200 coins from the famed Smithsonian national Numismatic Collection.

    NCS has implemented a new fee structure effective March 1, 2008. They have also created a flat fee modern tier.

    An 1804 Silver Dollar, the “King of Coins,” will be auctioned in April. How many millions will it bring?

    There were several new commemorative coins announced from around the world. The Swissmint has introduced a bimetallic Golden Eagle Commemorative Coin.

    The British Royal Mint will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the decimal £1 coin with a 14 coin proof collector set.

    The Perth Mint will release a second Historial Coin Collection celebrating Austrailia’s currency heritage.

    Numismaster recently took a look at the Carson City Mint.

    And now for some colorful, notable auctions. Coins from the Franklin Half series seem prone to acquiring very pleasing toning. Here’s a colorful 1955 Franklin Half PCGS MS65 FBL.

    Here’s a rainbow colored 1967 Special Mint Set. I think this is the nicest color I have seen on a Special Mint Set.
