March 10, 2008: ANA Names Executive Director, Gold and Gold Jewelry, US Coin Metal Composition Changes

There were several important coin related stories that hit the news on Friday- a new executive director for the ANA, an auctioneer acquisition, and a permanent CEO for Escala Group. Also, some articles on the price of gold and gold jewelry, a reintroduced bill for US coin composition changes, Monroe Massachusetts, the history of coin grading, and notable auctions. The ANA named Larry J. Shepherd its new executive director. He is a former banking and investment executive with background as both a coin collector and coin dealer.
Spink, the London based world leading auctioneers of coins, stamps, medals, bank notes, bonds, and share certificates has acquired New York based auction firm R.M. Smythe & Company.
Escala Group, which includes well known numismatic companies such as Teletrade and Bowers and Merena Auctions, has named Greg Roberts as its permanent President and CEO.

A House bill to change the metal composition of US coins was recently reintroduced. Around the globe, Australia is starting to consider similar measures of either reducing the size of coins or changing metal composition.
