March 27, 2008: While I Was Away, Presidential Error Coins, Protect Your Coin Collection, Commodity Bubble?

    By admin | March 27, 2008

American Gold EagleWelcome back to Coin Update!

I’m back a little bit later than anticipated because our son had to spend a few extra days in the ICU. He was discharged yesterday afternoon, healthy and happy. We’re all glad to finally be home together as a family!

The big story while I was away was the sharp drop in the price of gold which occurred at the end of last week. While there has been some chatter that Bernanke has ended the commodity bull run, the less reactive stories seem to find a silver (or gold) lining. Also, The New Yorker weighs in on the penny, Presidential Error Coins, protecting your coin collection, new $5 bills circulate, the National Treasure Hunt, and notable auctions! On to the links…

This piece from Minyanville takes a rational look at the current Commodity Bull Market.

Here’s the counterpoint, “Bernanke took care of the commodity bubble.”

The New Yorker chronicles the composition and controversy over the penny in “Penny Dreadful.” WalletPop provides some counterpoints along with the emotional response that many penny boosters share.

It seems like each week, another country faces up to the dilemma of their lowest value coin. Russia considers eliminating the kopeck.

For coin collectors just getting started or looking for renewed focus, here’s an article from BellaOnline: What Type of Coin Should You Collect?

James Monroe sure has it rough! Take a look at some of these reactions to the Presidential Dollar Coin.

The new $5 Bills enter circulation. Consumers love them, according to the BEP. McDonald’s cashiers, not so much.

Coin Collector’s Blog starts using Twitter!

The ANA has created a National Treasure Hunt as part of this year’s 85th Annual National Coin Week from April 20-26.

And now for some notable auctions. First a 1936 Brilliant Proof Lincoln Cent NGC PF 64 RD.

The rainbows have it! A beautiful Rainbow Morgan Silver Dollar.

I’ve always wanted one of these… A Mint Sealed Bag of 1974-P Eisenhower Dollars.

That’s your super update for the past week. See you all tomorrow!
