Ready for your weekend and Monday edition? First up, The Wall Street Journal covers the precious coin market. Also, precious metals cycles, the Ultra High Relief Saint Gaudens Gold Double Eagle, history of gold and silver coins, tell Dave Harper what to blog about next, the US Mint’s 2008 product release schedule, and notable auctions. On to the links…

The Wall Street Journal published this article titled Precious-Coin Market May Lose Its Luster. Give it a read, but in my opinion the article is generalized and unfocused, and never really gets around to discussing the topic suggested by the title. It starts out with the volatility of bullion coins, jumps to newly minted “never-circulated” and proof coins, randomly mentions September 11, counterfeit coins on eBay, and finally states that coins and ETFs are considered “capital assets” by the IRS.

Tom Michael takes an excellent and timely look at Precious Metals Cycles.

Another fresh perspective on the current move in gold by looking at the price action of the mid 1970’s before the super spike in January 1980.

On Friday, the US Mint announced that the Secretary of the Treasury has authorized the issuance of a one ounce 24 karat gold recreation of the ultra high relief $20 Saint Gaudens Gold Double Eagle.

And now for a few notable auctions to wrap things up. First up, an NGC “Star” coin that certainly deserves the designation. Take a look at the beautiful obverse of this Morgan Dollar.

And next up, an original 1890-CC GSA Morgan Dollar.
