New Mexico QuarterWelcome to Coin Update!

First up, the recent rally in gold with some articles on the impacts of investor interest in platinum and palladium. Also, the Q&A session with US Mint Director Ed Moy, Dominion Grading Service, more on the proposed Star Spangled Banner Commemorative, some rare early dollars go on the block, and notable auctions. On to the links…

Although it looks as if the rally may pause today, gold has risen in each of the past five sessions for a gain of over 7%.

Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) are contributing to the global market deficit of platinum. Platinum’s cousin palladium is also starting to see increased demand from investors.

Stories about cashing in old gold jewelry are back. The article focuses on the fact that people are searching for new sources of income to pay for groceries and gas.

Back when the New Mexico State Quarter was launched, US Mint Director Edmund Moy held a Coin Collectors Forum with a Q&A session. Here’s a recap of the Q&A.

The new third party grading service on the block, Dominion Grading Service (DGS) started accepting submissions for grading in May. To date they have graded 638 coins and counting. I have not tried their service, but one of the aspects that I like is the Visual Population Report. They will show images of each coin certified when looking up the population for a coin.

More details on the Star Spangled Banner and War of 1812 Commemorative Coin proposal.

The upcoming Heritage auction at the Long Beach Expo will feature many rare early dollars, including two 1794 Flowing Hair Dollars.

Do you want to present at the World’s Fair of Money? If you’re an ANA member, you have the chance to participate in the Numismatic Theater presentation.

And now for a few notable auctions. A nice example of this key date coin, make way for the 1932-S Washington Quarter PCGS MS63.

Future rarity in the making? The SMS 1997-P Jefferson Nickel had a mintage of only 25,000. Here’s one in PCGS MS69FS.

    See you Friday!
