May 27, 2008: 2008 Silver Eagles, Palladium Saint Gaudens

Welcome back to Coin Update!
We hope you enjoyed the Memorial Day Holiday break. There were several reactions to the Wall Street Journal article on the 2008 Silver Eagle shortage. Also, the US Mint releases pricing on the Louisa Adams FSG Coins, the Numismatist available online, coin crime, the Palladium Saint Gaudens Coin and other coin program bills, and notable auctions. On to the links…
To start things off, here’s a post from Coin Collector’s Blog to recognize Memorial Day and reintroduce the 2005 Marine Corps 230th Anniversary Silver Dollar.
About.com: Coins covers the 2008 Silver Eagle rationing and resulting paradigm shift.
An interesting take on the same topic. Is the Silver Eagle shortage an example of “bad money” driving “good money” out of circulation? US Dollars (bad money) exchanged for precious metals (good money)?
Pricing and ordering information for the upcoming Louisa Adams First Spouse Gold Coins is released.
Warning: Do not try this at home. A Detroit man tried to pass off 130 rolls of pennies as rolls of dimes, by placing one dime on each end. Result: 18 months to 5 years in prison.
The Numismatist is now available online.
Did you know that the 1909-S Indian Head Cent has a lower mintage than the 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent?
Numismaster covers the Palladium Saint Gaudens coins as well as other coin program bills moving their way through the system.
And now for some notable auctions. A 1793 Large Cent offered with no reserve.
Two interesting 11 Cent Coin Auctions: The first, a Lincoln Cent Struck on a Roosevelt Dime certified by ANACS as genuine. The second, an uncertified coin with the obverse of a dime and reverse of a penny. As the description states, this coin is most likely a novelty item and not genuine, but it hasn’t stopped some bidders from pushing the price over $200!
That’s a wrap. See you tomorrow!
