June 2, 2008: Coins and the Economy, $1 Million Gold Coins For Sale
By admin | June 2, 2008
Welcome to your weekend and Monday edition of Coin Update!
We’re back with your daily update of coin collecting news from around the web. First up, coins and the economy. Also, Numismatic News launches a business directory, the legal side of coin production, the 100 kilogram Canadian Maple Leaf, Top Ten rare coin purchasing strategies, iReport.com on collecting, and notable auctions.
Gold and precious metals rebound off of last week’s lows, but economic data is on the way which will likely shape the action this week.
Does the coin hobby thrive during slower economic times?
Numismatic News launches a new online business directory. Find information about products, services, dealers, events, and clubs.
Have you ever wondered about the laws which govern the production of coins in the United States? Coin Collector’s Blog tells you everything you ever wanted to know (and maybe didn’t want to know) about the legalities of US coin production.
The Arizona State Quarter launch as covered by a local newspaper.
Last week’s updates included an article on the world’s largest coin, the 100 kilogram Canadian Gold Maple Leaf with a $1 Million face value. According to this article, the Canadian Mint actually offers these coins for sale and has received orders for five coins. The price: $2.5 to $3 Million each.
Some interesting questions are raised by the widening production gaps between the Philadelphia and Denver Mints.
More than 350 coins from the inventory of Anaconda Rare Coins will be sold without reserve in Heritage Auction Galleries in June.
The Top Ten Rare Coin Purchasing Strategies.
Besides coins, what else do you collect? Check out the iReport on “stuff you love to stash.” (Found via Capital Treasures Blog.)
And now for a few notable auctions. Most coins made into jewelery really aren’t to my liking, but this $2.50 Gold Indian made into a diamond encircled pendant has an interesting and unique appeal.
Collectors are still clamoring for the 2008-W Silver Eagles with Reverse of 2007. Take a look at the current auctions for the new variety.
That’s it. Have a great Monday!

Wow! That is a huge premium for this set.
I hadn’t noticed or heard anything about it until now.
I am not aware of anything special about the coins in the set. The 2007 First Spouse Medals are still available for only $3.50 each or $12.95 for all 4. The Unc Presidential Dollars can also be found easily.
Looks like people are attaching a premium to the set since it is sold out and possibly had a low total production.
I’ll look into this further and see if I can find any additional info.
