    Recent statements from the Federal Reserve Chairman impact gold and other precious metals. Also, First Spouse Gold pricing, a new coin site to check out, a follow up on the ethics of out-of-date dealer prices, a new aspect to consider in the penny debate, so-called fourth party graders, and notable auctions.     Yesterday Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke signaled that interest rate cuts may be at an end and talked tough on inflation and the dollar. Gold and precious metals moved lower in response, but will the tough talk lead to any significant action?

    Also yesterday, options trading began for the the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD), giving gold investors (or speculators) a new vehicle to capitalize on gold’s recent volatility.

    Last week the US Mint released the latest coin in the First Spouse Gold Series. Mint News Blog takes a look at the impact of the large premiums set by the Mint above the precious metal value.

    Are high gold prices impacting coin dealer’s business?

    Here’s an interesting new coin site to check out: Cyrrion. The site has the ambitious aim of putting up a picture of every coin ever minted. Here is an example of the individual coin pages.

    A follow up on the issue of out of date dealer prices.

    Coin of the Day raises an interesting point in the penny debate. The lowest value coin accepted by vending machines is the nickel and you rarely hear people complain that prices are being inflated by rounding up.
