June 11, 2008: Army Infantry Coins, Rhodium, Louisa Adams Sales Figures
By admin | June 11, 2008
Welcome to Coin Update!
Here comes your daily round up of coin collecting news from around the web! First up, some articles to provide a backdrop for the recent decline in precious metals. Also, Army Infantry Commemorative coins, eBay on your iPhone, Rhodium and Platinum, Louisa Adams sales figures, auction results, and notable auctions. On to the links…
Gold and precious metals have been on the decline, in large part due to recent tough talk on inflation and supportive talk on the US dollar. But is all of the tough talk just a bluff?
This Numismaster Market Update takes us through some of the news of the past few weeks that might signal an impending financial crisis.
The House passed authorizing legislation for a new commemorative silver dollar to honor the US Army Infantry. The AP article states that the coins will sell for $10, but that is really just the surcharge amount that will go to the National Infantry Museum. The bill must still pass the Senate and be signed by the President.
EBay announced a new auction application for the iPhone. You’ll be able to buy and sell items wherever you are.
Don’t you wish the US Mint had been offering Rhodium American Eagles all these years?
The first week’s sales figures for the Louisa Adams First Spouse Gold Coins came in low as expected. It’s another stark contrast to the opening day sell outs for the first three coins of the series.
We’ve seen a lot of stories about the Cheerios Sacagawea Dollar, but what about the Cheerios Pennies?
In world coin news, a new Swiss Silver Commemorative Coin celebrating historical mountain railways and a four coin collection of silver Piedfort specimens from the Royal British Mint.
Results from the Bowers and Merena Baltimore auction and more results David Lawrence’s South Seated Dollar Collection.
And now for some notable auctions. First, a 1956 Lincoln Cent struck on a silver dime planchet graded VF30. It’s amazing to think that this coin spent so much time in circulation before someone recognized it as an error.
Similarly, here’s a well circulated 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent. How many hands did this coin pass through before someone realized its value as a key date coin?
And lastly, check out this auction where you can get one Eisenhower Dollar for only $1 with free shipping. No catch!
Have a great day!

That’s definitely a no-lose proposition. I also placed an order for some and have the story up on Mint News Blog and this morning’s Coin Update.
I’ll look around some more on those First Spouse Sets and see what I can find.

Looking to learn more about rhodium coins. Are there any available to purchase, if so at what price? And what dealers handle rhodium?
Thank you,
Russ
