July 3, 2008: Louis Braille Coins, Northern Mariana Islands Quarter
By admin | July 3, 2008
Before you pack up for the July 4th weekend, here’s some fresh coin collecting news from around the internet! First, is gold skipping the summer doldrums? Also, the design for the first US coin with readable Braille, Northern Mariana Islands Quarter, new developments for Teletrade, and some very special notable auctions. On to the links…
Will gold’s rally skip the typical summer break this year? Quote from the article, “Sub-$1,000 gold days are drawing to a close and by the end of this year, I would find it difficult to explain a sub-$1,000 gold price.”
The US Mint unveils the design for the upcoming 2009 Louis Braille Commemorative Coin. It is the first US Coin with readable Braille. (The Alabama State Quarter included Braille, but I guess it was not “readable.”)
EBay backpedals on their plan to ban non-Paypal payment methods in the Australian market.
Northern Mariana Islands selects their Quarter design.
Teletrade continues to post some impressive results. After their special Friday auction last week, they ended June with a record high for prices realized. Teletrade has also just started a new Gold Rewards Program.
CoinNews.net provides results from the June 2008 Summer FUN Heritage Auction.
From “a blog about coins” that I just recently discovered, have you ever been called upon by a non-collector for your numismatic expertise?
Are you in the midst of making a difficult decision? The US Mint has a solution for you. Try out “Executive Order” and get your answer.
And now for some notable auctions. I haven’t seen an error like this before. This 1964 Roosevelt Dime Broadstruck with Reverse Indent looks like a “Silver Mushroom.”
In 1995, who would have thought that the 1995-W Proof Gold Eagle would be less valuable than the 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle?
To wrap up this shortened week, a very special coin. It’s the privately minted “$100 Gold Union” designed by George T. Morgan. The design was discovered in 2002 and might have been one of the most beautiful US coins if it had been minted. A while back, Coin Collector’s Blog had a nice write up on the design and history of the proposed coin.
Have a great July 4th and weekend! See you on Monday!
