July 18, 2008: 2008 Proof Platinum Eagles, Disabled Veterans Coins

    By admin | July 18, 2008

Buffalo Gold ThumbWelcome back to Coin Update!

We wrap up a somewhat tumultuous week with another fresh batch of coin collecting news! First, gold is returning to the mainstream press. Also, some curious occurrences for the 2008 Platinum Eagles, Disabled Veterans Coins, the CCAC meeting, coin authentication, coin counterfeiting, and notable auctions. On to the links…

You know gold has been rallying when you start seeing articles like “How to invest in gold” popping up again in the mainstream press. Let’s just hope gold isn’t on the cover of Business Week any time soon.

The 2008-W Proof Platinum Eagles have oddly disappeared from the US Mint’s website, lending some support to an unconfirmed rumor. The following day the Mint issued a product release announcement for the uncirculated version of the coins- over two weeks after the coins went on sale. What’s going on?

The President has officially signed the Disabled Veterans Coin Act into law. The commemorative silver dollars will be issued in 2010.

The CCAC will be meeting August 1 at the World’s Fair of Money and include a public forum where you can voice your opinions.

How would you like cartoon mice featured on your country’s official legal tender coins?

An article worth reading on attention to deal in coin authentication.

Numismaster brings you the flip side of authentication with tools of the counterfeiter.

Today’s coin image is one the new Fractional Gold Buffalo Coins. The Mint has just put up the product pages and sales begin July 22!

And now for some notable auctions. One of my favorite key date coins. The 1885 Liberty “V” Nickel PCGS VG-10.

Get an instant collection of proof State Quarters. Here’s a collection of all the clad State Quarter Proof Sets from 1999-2008.

Better yet, how about an instant collection of Silver Eagles? Here are all of the regular issue Proof Silver Eagles from 1986-2008.

    Have a great weekend!
