July 24, 2008: 2008 Mandela Coin Frenzy, ANA World’s Fair of Money

Proof Gold EagleWelcome to Coin Update!

We’re glad you could join us for another round up of coin collecting news! First, gold and platinum seem to be on the ropes. Also, the frenzy for the the new 2008 Mandela R5 Coin, the 2008 US Mint Set, ANA World’s Fair of Money, Canadian Coins, a unique Australian medal sells for $750,000, and notable auctions. On to the links…

Gold tries to stabilize after hitting a two week low. Ditto for platinum, but after a six month low.

BusinessWeek runs an article describing the tough times for eBay entrepreneurs.

The 2008 Mandela R5 Coin was released on July 18, and there has already been a frenzy of activity on the secondary market. The coins can even be found on eBay’s US marketplace listed for $9 each. (For reference 1 US Dollar = 7.51441 SA Rand)

The US Mint officially announces the release date July 30 for the 2008 US Mint Set. (Over at Mint New Blog, the release date was posted over a week ago.)

The Baltimore Sun on the upcoming ANA World’s Fair of Money, which will be held in Baltimore.

Susan Headley has some observations on Canadian money and coins. What do you think of their Loonies and Toonies?

And fittingly, here’s information on the 2008 Lucky Loonie to be released by the Royal Canadian Mint.

A medal carved by a convict and expert forger sold for $750,000 at auction. It is knwon as the Charlotte Medal, Australia’s first piece of colonial art.

And now for some notable auctions. Remember the old ANACS grading cards with photos of the coin? Here’s a 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent graded MS65/63 by ANACS way back in 1984.

Here’s an enormous collection of NGC MS70 and PF 70 Ultra Cameo Gold Commemoratives all in one auction.

A Morgan Dollar high on eye appeal. It’s an 1880-S PL with a Star designation from NGC.

Have a great day!

I will try my best to cover the world coin and currency markets, but most of my knowledge is about US coins, so this tends to be what I write most about.
