September 2, 2008: Alaska State Quarter Ceremony, Royal Canadian Mint 100th Anniversary Coins
By admin | September 2, 2008
Welcome to Coin Update!
We hope you enjoyed the long holiday weekend. Now its time for some coin collecting news from around the internet. First, another sell off in commodities. Also, the “Alaska State Quarter Conspiracy,” 1972 Lincoln Cent, Royal Canadian Mint’s 100th Anniversary Coins, coin dealer review, the battle for ten 1933 Gold Double Eagles, and notable auctions. On to the links…
A sell off in commodities brings gold back below the $800 level.
The Alaska State Quarter release ceremony took place several days after the quarters were released into circulation. For the prior 48 quarters, the ceremony and circulation release took place on the same day. McCain made the Alaska governor his surprise VP pick on the day of the release ceremony. Did the US Mint know something?
What does “Uncirculated” mean to the US Mint? They have alternately used the term to describe a range of different products and finishes over the years.
An experience that has probably happened to every coin collector: Coined For Money finds an “almost rare” 1972 Lincoln Cent.
Curator & Collector has made a series of posts on the Royal Canadian Mint’s 100th Anniversary and the related product offerings. “The 2008 program saw exceptional and beautiful coins struck, with low mintages, at exorbitantly high prices, a serious flaw.”
Susan’s Coin Blog has another coin dealer review. This one is for L&C Coins.
The legal battle for ten 1933 Saint Gaudens Gold Double Eagles continues.
Here’s the response to an interesting question: Can you tell me some ways that I can improve my collection with spending little or no money?
CoinNews.net has information and images of the newly issued silver and gold Maltese Euro Coins.
And now for some notable auctions. First a nice looking collection of 1950-1964 Proof Lincoln Cents in a capital holder.
Next, the popular 1909 VDB Lincoln Cent graded PCGS MS66RD in an old green holder.
And last, the always interesting six cent coin. It’s a 2000 Jefferson Nickel Struck on a Lincoln Cent certified by NGC as MS65RD.
