December 17, 2008: National Parks Quarters Details, US Mint Sold Out Products

Here comes another round up of coin collecting news from all around the web. More details on the impending series of National Park Quarters. Also, still more US Mint sold out products, direct ship Native American Dollars, strong areas of the coin market, auction highlights, semi-coin related news stories, and notable auctions. After another up-day for gold, the financial press is starting to rally around the case for still higher gold prices.  Amidst the summer doldrums, they seemed to be making the opposite case.

Susan Headley discusses the impending National Parks Quarters Program and brings to light some of the finer points of the legislation.

From a Coin Network discussion, some other interesting aspects of the National Park Quarters legislation: there will be 5 ounce silver duplicates of each quarter, and the series could potentially have a duration of 22 years!

More US Mint sellouts. This time it’s the 2008 Sacagawea Dollars bags and rolls and the 2008 Kennedy Half Dollar bags.

The US Mint announces that the Native American Dollar coins will be available through the Direct Ship Program on January 2, 2009.

In more semi-coin related news, a group of three have been arrested for a scheme to make counterfeit Coinstar receipts and cash them in at supermarkets.

And now for some notable auctions. First, a complete set of Buffalo Nickels including all of the key dates. The seller also has separate auctions for the 1918-D 8 over 7 and 1937-D Three Legged Buffalo.

A nice example of the key date 1916-D Mercury Dime. It’s graded VG10 by PCGS.

Last, here’s a link to current auctions for 2008 US Proof Sets. The sets sold out less than a week ago and prices have already doubled from the US Mint’s offering price.
