A Preview and Summary of 2009 Coins

2009 will be an interesting year for United States coin collectors. The year will feature the debut one highly anticipated coin, the launch of two new coin series, and two unique commemorative coins.

One of the most eagerly awaited coin releases in recent memory will take place in January. This is the Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin, which is a digital recreation of the coin originally envisioned by Augustus Saint Gaudens. Suspense has been building for the 24 karat one ounce gold coin since early in 2008.

Two new coin series will begin. The first is the one year series of quarters with designs honoring the District of Columbia and the five United States Territories. The second new series is the Native American Dollar coins, which will honor the history and contributions of Native Americans. The 2009 Native American Dollar design will feature the Three Sisters method of planting.

The Lincoln Cent will get a new reverse design. The obverse design of the Lincoln Cent has run uninterrupted for 100 years. The reverse design was changed in 1959 to mark the Lincoln’s 150th birthday. To mark his 200th birthday in 2009, the reverse will feature four different designs representing stages of Lincoln’s life.

Two unique commemorative coins will be issued. The first honors Abraham Lincoln. The reverse of the coin includes the famous closing words from the Gettysburg Address. The second commemorative coin honors Louis Braille, inventor of the Braille system of writing for the visually impaired. The coin will feature the first readable Braille on a US coin.

In addition to these already announced coins for 2009, collectors can also expect the customary annual US coin sets, such as the 2009 Proof Set and 2009 Mint Set. Collectors are also expected collectible versions of the American Silver Eagle, American Gold Eagle, American Platinum Eagle, and American Gold Buffalo coins.
