January 6, 2009: US Mint Pricing in 2009, Commemorative 2 Euro Coin, Coin Videos
Welcome back to Coin Update!
Here's another round up of coin collecting news from around the web! I am just back from visiting the Philadelphia Mint for a tour. You can check out my post on Mint News Blog for a review. Also, the US Mint makes a major change to its pricing policy, commemorative 2 Euro Coin, Argentina Coin shortage, 2009 Koala Gilded Silver Coin, coin videos, and notable auctions. On to the links...
To start, some quick charts on gold and silver, including the Gold/Silver Ratio, which exploded higher in the second half of 2008.
Yesterday I had the opportunity to take a tour of the Philadelphia Mint. It was a fun experience that I would recommend to anyone in the area. The post also includes images of the new 2009 Native American Dollars.
The US Mint is implementing a significant change to their pricing policy for Gold and Platinum Numismatic products. Prices may be changed up to once per week based on the weekly average prices of the metals. (Incidentally, the notification also revealed the price for the Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin. It will be $1,239 assuming the price of gold remains at the same levels.)
A new commemorative 2 Euro coin is released to mark the 10th anniversary of the Euro.
An article from the Wall Street Journal on the coin shortage in Argentina. They recommend an interesting solution to the problem.
Coin Collector's Blog follows up his post on the Ten Best State Quarters with the Ten Worst.
An interesting story of a father and son who found over $1,000 in change during 15 minute walks taken each day during 2008.
The Perth Mint issues the 2009 Koala Gilded Silver Coin.
Two coin videos that are worth watching. The PCGS Coin Grading Process found by Coin Blogger and the hoard of 264 gold coins recently discusvered in Jerusalem posted on CoinNews.
And now for some notable auctions. First, the 2008-W Proof $50 Gold Buffalo with multiple coins available.
The 2008-W Proof $100 Platinum Eagle graded NGC PF 69 Ultra Cameo, also with multiple coins available.
And what's better than a 100 ounce silver bar? Five 100 ounce silver bars!
Have a great evening!
Thank you very much for linking to my PCGS video. I hope that other coin collectors find it informative.
Also, I loved you article on the tour of the US Mint. I live outside of Philadelphia, but believe it or not I have not taken the tour. It seems that the tour hours are always inconvenient for me. Some day I am just going to take off work and go during the week.

Thanks. It is definitely worth making the visit some day.
I live pretty close to the West Point Mint, but unfortuntately they don’t allow tours.
