January 9, 2009: 2008 Proof Gold Eagles, Hawaii Quarter Mintage, Hungary Wins COTY

Here’s a Friday round up of coin collecting news from around the web! Two noteworthy stories on gold and silver. Also, 2008 Proof Gold Eagles, full step Jefferson Nickels, State Quarter final mintage, unique 1793 Wreath Large Cent, Coin of the Year Winner, and notable auctions. On to the links…

According to Merrill Lynch, the wealthy are now insisting on physical gold bars and coins rather than ETFs. Quote from the article, “They are so worried they want a portable asset in their house. I never thought I would be getting calls from clients saying they want a box of krugerrands”

Although silver posted a loss for 2008, the average price of silver for 2008 posted a 12% increase over the average price for 2007.

The 2008 Proof Gold Eagles sold out, and then the 1/10 oz. coin oddly went back on sale.

The production figures for the 2008 Hawaii Quarter are posted by the US Mint. They have the highest mintage for a 2008 State Quarter and bring the total State Quarter mintage to 34,797,600,000!

PCGS certifies the unique 1793 Wreath Large Cent. This coins is part of the American Numismatic Society’s collection and it is the first time it has been graded.

Numismaster announces the winner for the 2009 People’s Choice Coin of the Year Award. The winner is Hungary with a 2007 dated coin from the Hungarian Castle series.
