January 19, 2009: ClickCoins.com Launched, Obama Inaugural Medallion, NASA Coins

2009 Washington DC QuarterWelcome back to Coin Update!

We’re back to bring you another round up of coin collecting news from around the web! First, a new coin website that will hopefully become your home page! Also, a hoard of gold coins discovered in the UK, the first coin bill, the Obama Inaugural Medallion, complimentary copy of The Planchet, coins over the Antarctic, the Presidential Dollar, and notable auctions. On to the links…

Over the weekend I finished a new coin website called ClickCoins.com. The site aggregates all of the latest coin collecting news, blog posts, and discussions on a single page. See the full announcement over on Mint News Blog.

A hoard of 824 gold coins from between 40BC and 15AD have been discovered in the UK. Interesting point from a separate article on the same find, the “value when in circulation had been estimated at a modern equivalent of between £500,000 and £1m, but they were likely to be worth less than that now.”

The first coin bill of the 111th Congress has been introduced H.R. 255 NASA 50th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Act. If the bill sounds familiar, that’s because a similar bill was introduced in 2008, which was when NASA’s 50th anniversary actually occurred.

The Royal Australian Mint will fly 500 collector coins over the Antarctic to celebrate the 100th anniversary of attaining the south magnetic pole. The coins will later be made available for purchase by collectors.

The Presidential Dollar series generated a lot of controversy by moving “In God We Trust” to the edge of the coin. But what about two other significant changes: the omission of the word “Liberty” and expressing the denomination as “$1″?

And now for some notable auctions. First, an attractive toned set of 1948-1963 Uncirculated Franklin Half Dollars.

  1. I am loving the ClickCoins site. While I subscribe to all of those sites that have RSS feeds, it is nice to see all of my favorite coin sites’ articles in one place.

  2. Jon Williams says:

    Dear Sirs/Madams,

With regards to our New, Executive (22 Carat Gold) 3oz Presidential Obama Coin (double sided). We have already received global recognition from magazine editorials and investors around the world who state: ‘the gold market is credit crunch proof and the Obama Coin is set to overtake the Mandela Coin’. The initial retail value of the 3oz Presidential Obama Coin some months ago was [$4,000], however, just last week this increased to [$5,200] and this week the coin is currently hovering just below the [$10,000] mark…
This increase is due to the coins rarity, overwhelming consumer demand and global economic market, as investors have nowhere to park their money. The 3oz Presidential Obama Coin is a strict world-wide limited edition of [100] and is hallmarked with the famous [H stamp] recognized as the oldest, independent nongovernmental mint in the world. The hallmarking is done by the London Assay Office, which dates back the Royal Charter of the 13th century.

The New, Silver (925) 3oz Inauguration Coin (double sided) depicts the ‘Hand of History’, as President Obama signs the Approximation at 13:10 on the 20th January 2009.
This coin is also a strict world-wide limited edition of [250] and has also increased in value hovering at $1,000.
