March 13, 2009: Gold and Silver Sales Data, UHR Double Eagle Slowing Sales, Legal Tender

Here’s another round up of coin collecting news to bring us into the weekend. First, stories on gold and silver, along with some firsthand data about the increased number of gold and silver orders. Gold regains some of its luster. Holdings in the GLD exchange traded fund now represent the sixth largest gold holdings in the world.

Lately, I’ve been hearing many people discuss silver’s immense discount to gold. Here’s an article discussing the topic in more detail.

Precious metals dealer APMEX reports that gold and silver orders were up 262% and 358% for 2008. They also provide a preliminary indication for this year: “So far, 2009 appears to be making those increases look paltry by comparison.”

The pace of Ultra High Relief Double Eagle sales has slowed considerably since the since the torrid pace of the first few days. Last week, the US Mint sold less than one thousand additional coins.
