Welcome back to Coin Update!
After a big first birthday weekend for my son Jason, we’re back with another round up of coin collecting stories from around the web! First, the upcoming Louis Braille Commemorative and soon to be sold out Lincoln Commemorative coins. Also, throwing out gold, ANA membership and dues changes, “Smoking Liberty,” numismatic directory, early days of the Lincoln Cent, reports from the National Money Show, and notable auctions. On to the links…
The 2009 Louis Braille Commemorative Silver Dollar will go on sale at the US Mint on March 26. This will be the first US coin which includes readable Braille characters. (Other US coins have included Braille characters, but they were too small to be considered readable.)
I think this is the first mainstream press story I have seen on the 2009 Lincoln Commemorative. It might be coming a bit late, since the coins are now less than 27,000 coins from a sell out.
If you hide your gold coins in your basement, don’t let your brother clean out your basement. An offbeat local story about $10,000 worth of gold accidentally thrown in the trash.
The ANA has released a new dues structure. Coin Collector’s Blog outlines the new membership options and new fees.
Have you heard of the “Smoking Liberty” Seated Liberty Quarter die variety? DGS has slabbed a hoard of 28 of the variety.
Krause Publications has published their 2009 Numismatic Industry Directory. The directory will be included in the March 31 issue of Numismatic News and is also available online.
Some interesting stories about early Lincoln Cent production, shortages, and heavy demand.
An article on the diminishing coin production for 2009. In addition to the standard reason of the economy, they also mention lower interest in collecting quarters after the completion of the State Quarters Program.
Reports from the ANA National Money Show held in Portland Oregon from March 13-15. The recurring theme: demand for gold. One quote from a dealer, “My sales here were almost exclusively gold coins. I sold one or two other things.”
And now for some notable auctions. First, a complete BU Roll Set of Lincoln Cents from 1959 to 2009!
A tough Peace Dollar to find in top grade. Here’s a 1924-S Peace Dollar PCGS MS65 with CAC sticker.
Last, the always popular Silver Eagle Green Monster Box. This box contains 500 2009 American Silver Eagles and comes sealed.
Have a great day!
I question the usefulness of this new online directory that Kause started. It’s obviously a listing of their advertiser’s only, which I’m sure is nice for them, but very limited in it’s scope. This is most likely the only time I’ll be looking at it anyway, so there’s no harm done. I personally prefer a open directory like http://www.coinwebsites.com/
It looks like the mint will offer the Louis Braille Bicentennial Uncirculated Silver Dollar in Easy-Open Capsule. Which one should a person buy?
Ike-
Unless you have a specific reason for ordering the Easy Open Capsule, I would opt for the regular style capsule. A few people have already expressed the concern that the “easy open” version might open during shipment and leave the coin rattling around during transit.
