There’s always something happening in the world of coin collecting! Let’s take a look at some of the most notable and interesting coin related stories from around the internet. First one story each on gold and platinum. It’s a common question these days: with demand for gold continuing, why is the price of gold not soaring?

In other precious metals news, platinum regains some of its luster and reaches a six month high.

The 2009 Braille Commemorative Silver Dollar launched today at the US Mint. The story has garnered some mainstream media attention like this story from CNN. Going beyond the coin, here’s Susan Headley’s post which provides some excellent biographical information on Louis Braille.

Hot off the press, the 2009 Lincoln Cent Two-Roll Set has now sold out at the US Mint. The relatively expensive offering was released less than two weeks ago.

NGC describes “copper spots” which appear on many vintage gold pieces, providing an excellent account of why they appear and how they impact grading.

Is it a sign of the times? Dave Harper reports that many people are “scrambling to figure out the value of numismatic items in their possession.”

The ANA Board of Governors approves a balanced budget for the 2009-2010 fiscal year.

As incredible as it sounds, you can still make money digging for gold in California. Here’s a story about a modern day prospector who has made as much as $10,000 in a single day.

They didn’t find coins but medallions, nonetheless this is an enjoyable story about two children’s discovery of property stolen 30 years ago.

Coined for Money takes a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and comes back with some photos and information on some of their ancient coins.

And now for some notable auctions. Another one of the Abigail Adams Bronze Medal Mule Errors surfaces on eBay. Based on the small number of examples trickling onto the market, there don’t appear to be a lot of these.

On the other hand, there were over seventy 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagles graded MS70 by PCGS or NGC.

Last, here’s a Peace Dollar with Rainbow Toning. Attractive toning on Peace Dollars is considerably more difficult to find than on Morgan Dollars.
