April 6, 2009: Gold Prices and Demand, Ultra High Relief Gold Companion Books

American Gold BuffaloWelcome back to Coin Update!

Here’s another round up on the latest news on coins and coin collecting from around the web! First, an article on gold demand and its investment prospects as the price of the metal reaches a multi month low. Also, the Ultra High Relief companion books are arriving, current commemorative coin legislation summary, 2009 Lincoln Cent stories, the market for generic gold double eagles, Superior Galleries suspends auction activity, and notable auctions. On to the links…

An article on demand for gold with some interesting facts and some cringe-worthy quotes. Interesting fact: the Austrian Gold Philharmonic was the world’s best selling gold coin for the 2008 fourth quarter. Quote from a gold refiner and bar manufacturer: “The truth is, gold may go down slightly after you buy, but it will eventually become high again, so technically, you can’t go wrong.” As much as I like gold, nothing is without risk. The US Mint also chimes in with their standard one-liner: “The demand for gold has been unprecedented.”

Despite the pull backs in precious metals prices, the US Mint did sell the most American Silver Eagle bullion coins in a month since 1986.

The companion books for the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coins are arriving. In an ironic twist, many have reported that they need to sign for delivery of the books, while they did not have to sign for the $1,000+ Gold coin.

Coin Collector’s Blog provides this useful rundown of the current commemorative coin legislation that has been introduced in Congress this year.

A thoughtful post by Dave Harper ahead of the May 14 launch ceremony for the next 2009 Lincoln Cent. “Will we see packed highways and crowds of collectors at the May 14 formal introduction of the second 2009 Lincoln cent?”

Elementary school children finally found a way to get some of the new 2009 Lincoln Cents. They had their teacher ask their Senator.

A coin market report which examines the reasons behind the falling premiums for generic Gold Double Eagles.

Superior Galleries, a division of DGSE Companies, abruptly announced the suspension of all auction activities. Last week, DGSE wrote down goodwill associated with Superior Galleries in their latest quarterly financial results.

Last year, I was impressed by the unique design of the Dutch Archicture Commemorative. This year, I’m looking forward to their 400 Years Netherlands Manhattan coin. The coin features views of Manhattan from 1609 and 2009.

And now for some notable auctions. First, a beautiful US Coin Type Set from half cents to dollars with large images of all the coins included. The auction was started with no reserve.

Before this week, the 2007 Adams First Spouse Bronze Mule Errors were trickling onto eBay at a very slow pace. Recently, a rush of them were put on the market. Here’s a look at eBay auctions which currently show seven separate examples of the mule error for sale.

Last, a complete set of 1916-1945 Mercury Dimes, including the key date 1916-D Mercury Dime. The set comes in a vintage plastic case.
