April 10, 2009: Palladium Saint Gaudens, Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar Sales, Maundy Money

Platinum EagleWelcome back to Coin Update!

Here’s one final round up of news on coins and coin collecting to bring us into the weekend! First, prices for palladium and platinum have been moving up in advance of possible ETFs and a new bullion coin. Also, Puerto Rico Quarter bag sell out, Louis Braille Commemorative sales, slowing US Mint coin production, Lincoln Cent opportunities, Maundy Money, offbeat precious metals story, and notable auctions. On to the links…

Platinum and palladium have been catching a bid lately. A contributing factor is the proposal for new Platinum and Palladium ETFs.

In relation to coins, legislation was recently introduced to authorize palladium bullion and collector coins. Here are more details on the proposed Palladium Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Coins.

More bags and rolls sold out at the US Mint. This time is the Puerto Rico Quarter 1,000-Coin Bags. The coins first went on sale less than two weeks ago.

Also, here are the latest sales figures for the 2009 Louis Braille Bicentennial Commemorative.

In the month of March, US Mint facilities produced 165,040,000 coins. The number of quarters produced was just 200,000 at the Philadelphia Mint. Does this portend a shockingly low mintage for the next US territory quarter to be released for Guam?

Are you prepared to take advantage of Lincoln Cent opportunities? Here’s the story of a woman who keeps four rolls of Lincoln Cents with her, which came in handy when the opportunity arose to trade for four rolls of the new 2009 Lincoln Cents.

Stella Coin News examines the 1900 Lafayette Dollar, providing both the historical background and coin information.

In England, the Queen handed out specially minted “Maundy Money” to 83 men and 83 women. One of the recipients was a 107 year old woman, probably the oldest recipient in history.

An offbeat story from Argentina. A refitted fishing trawler carrying $22 million in gold and silver sunk carrying its precious cargo- or did it?

And now for some notable auctions. First, a 12 piece Gold Type Set in a Capital Plastics Holder including gold coins from $1 to $20.

The 1913 Type I Buffalo Nickel graded PCGS MS67. This would be a great coin to pick up for a type set.

And finally, the first 2009 Ultra High Relief Error Coin that I have seen offered. It’s certified by NGC as a Reverse Struck Thru Mint Error and graded MS69.

Have a wonderful weekend!
