May 18, 2009: Gold Investment, More Lincoln Cent Launch Coverage, 1942 Aluminum Lincoln Cent

American Gold EagleWelcome to Coin Update!

We’re back after the weekend break to bring you another round up of coin collecting news. First, two stories on gold, which sold off today after a two week rally which brought it back above the $900 level. Also, more coverage of the 2009 Formative Years  Lincoln Cent launch including the exchange in Washington DC, ways to earn extra money with coins, an unusual coin and rare punchboard will be up for sale, commentary on the recent coin market, and notable auctions. On to the links…

Is gold bracing for “a resumption of its long march upward”? Here’s an article examining the bullish case for gold.

Some hedge funds made big bets in gold during the first quarter of 2009.

More coverage and reactions to the launch day for the 2009 Lincoln “Rail Splitter” Cent. Here’s the coverage from Mint News Blog that I added late to Friday’s update, a report provided to Dave Harper, and Coin Collector’s Blog who made it to the exchange at Union Station, Washington DC.

Also coverage from the Union Station exchange from the Washington Post. Someone reportedly hired day laborers to get around the six rolls per person limit and collected 120 rolls.

Susan Headley is mentioned in this article published on CNN.com on creative ways to earn extra money. See #3 Search circulating coinage.

Certainly an unusual item, the experimental aluminum alloy 1942 Lincoln Cent Judd-2079. This pattern will be offered in Heritage’s Long Beach Sale starting May 28, 2009.

APMEX will sell a rare, unused punchboard for Booker T. Washington commemorative coins. All 1,000 punches are unused and ten original 1946 Booker T. Washington half dollars are included.

Some commentary on the coin market provided by NumisMedia. They see some potential bargains in the market, but believe that falling prices will ultimately create confidence and stability in the market.

And now for some notable auctions. We know some people got around the six rolls per person limit, but how did someone get a sealed 50 Roll Box of 2009 Formative Years Lincoln Cents?

A 1936 Satin Proof Buffalo Nickel that looks like it has some excellent eye appeal.

Last, the classic key date 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent PCGS MS65RD. Most notably, the coin is housed in an old PCGS rattler holder.

Have a great evening!
