May 22, 2009: Gold Buffalo Coin Delay, US Mint Strategic Coin Reserve, Ten Thousand Cents

Guam QuarterWelcome back to Coin Update!

Here is another round up of news and articles on coins and coin collecting to take you into the weekend! First, stories on gold and gold production. Also, the delay for this year’s collectible Gold Buffalo Coin, Guam Quarter bags and rolls, the US Mint’s possible strategic coin reserve, the “Ten Thousand Cents” project, a penny pyramid, thoughts on third party grading, and notable auctions. On to the links…

Forbes.com writes about “Gold’s Extremists.” Although the article takes a negative slant on gold, it does provide some data from the World Gold Council’s latest quarterly report.

Separately, a look at gold production in the world. Production peaked in 2001 and has been on the decline since. There have also been some interesting shifts in gold producing countries.

The release of the 2009 Proof Gold Buffalo Coin has been delayed. The one ounce proof coin will be the only collectible Gold Buffalo offered this year, down from ten product offerings last year.

The US Mint will soon offer Guam Quarter bags and rolls. Will the Guam Quarter have a lower mintage than the Puerto Rico Quarter?

The US Mint is considering starting a strategic coin reserve. This extra supply of coins could be tapped during periods of high coin demand or supply disruption.

A very cool blog post about Ten Thousand Cents. Someone paid ten thousand different workers one cent each to create tiny images which were later assembled as a complete drawing of a one hundred dollar bill.

More fun with cents. Here’s Coin Collector’s Blog on building the world’s largest penny pyramid.

An offbeat coin related story, a man in Pennsylvania convinced an ice cream shop that the government had just begun issued $20 coins and used a counterfeit $20 coin to purchase ice cream.

PCGS hires a new grader, which prompts some thoughts about third party grading.

And now for some notable auctions.First, The 2008-W Uncirculated Gold Buffalo 4 Coin Set with all four coins graded NGC MS70.

An interesting Delaware State Quarter Error. The coin is struck 20% off center on a 53% scrap and authenticated and graded by PCGS.

Last, a full $500 Sealed Box of 2009 Puerto Rico Quarters.

Have a great weekend!
