September 23, 2009: Current US Mint Products, Barber Halves and Franklin Halves, Peak Gold?

1996 Gold CauldronWelcome back to Coin Update!

We’re back with another round up of coin collecting news from around the internet. First, the latest US Mint product scheduled for release and a look at the US Mint products I am buying now. Also, opinions on gold seem to be aligning in one direction, coin shops and pawn stores in Connecticut, an interesting perspective on the US Mint, Barber Half Dollars, Franklin Half Dollars, Q. David Powers numismatic research library, Vatican City Euro coins, and notable auctions. On to the links…

On Monday, the US Mint will offer bags and rolls of the U.S. Virgin Islands Quarter. This date will also mark the release of the coins into circulation.

Today on Coin Update News, I published an article US Mint Products I Am Buying Now. It describes a few recently purchased products that I believe will be future winners.

What does it mean when opinions have reached a consensus? Here’s some food for thought from Dave Harper following the initial results of a poll asking whether gold has peaked.

An article about coin shops and pawn stores purchasing gold in Connecticut. I have been to Valley Coin in Seymour, CT mentioned in the article.

Many people have complained about the US Mint regarding aspects of their operations that they have little or no control over. Scott Barman of Coin Collector’s Blog sets the record straight in this Numismatic News Viewpoint: Mint Does What It’s Told by Law to Do.

The Carson City Coin Collectors of America have been making some great improvements to their website at CarsonCityCoinClub.com.

The reference book The Complete Guide to Barber Halves is now available online for free, courtesy of Stella Coin News.

A nice summary of the Franklin Half Dollar series, which has wavered in popularity over the years. The article covers its origins, design, production, and circulation.

The extensive numismatic research library of Q. David Bowers has been consigned to Fine Numismatic Books. The thousands of volumes will be offered for sale in three parts during 2010.

EU officials have issued some recommendations about the Euro coinage issued by Vatican City. They have taken issue with the Sede Vacante coins and the lack of circulation of their coins.

And now for some notable auctions. First, the 2008 Proof Andrew Jackson’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin, which sold out a few weeks before collectors expected. This one is sealed in the US Mint shipping box.

The popular 1937-D Three Legged Buffalo Nickel graded NGC MS 61.

Last, an impressive collection of Silver Eagles. The auction is for one roll of Silver Eagles for every year from 1986 to 2009.

That’s it for today. See you at the next update!
