October 14, 2009: Montville NJ Coin Robbery, US Mint Sales Figures, Articles on Gold

We’re back with another round up of coin collecting news and articles from around the web! First, several stories related to the robbery of coin dealer Julian Leidman following the Coinfest show. Also, the latest US Mint sales figures, analysis of some recently released US Mint products, a new UK coin design from a 9 year old, two articles on gold, PCGS Genuine coins, a new type of coin price guide, and notable auctions. After leaving Coinfest, Maryland dealer Julian Leidman was the victim of a robbery. Coins worth more than one million dollars were taken. Coin dealers have rallied to his cause by pledging a reward of $75,000 (and rising) for information leading the the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the robbery. Here’s a report from the Daily Record, an article from CoinLink with a description of some of the stolen coins, and last a story from NJ.com about how some coin dealers are reassessing security following the robbery.

Move over Matthew Dent, a nine year old child has won a competition to have her design appear on a 50p coin produced by the Royal British Mint. The design is for the 2012 Olympic Games in London and depicts the high jump.

With gold setting new highs, it has been discussed in the news more frequently. Here’s a recent article form the Post Gazette that starts with a skeptical tone, but brings in plenty of perspectives and quotes from gold bulls.

This second article draws comparisons between gold’s surge in 1980 and it’s recent rise in price.

Here’s an informative Q&A from About.com about the new PCGS Genuine holder coins. Before reading the article, I didn’t realize you could determine the reason the coin was ineligible for regular grading based on the numbers on the holder.

CoinLink provides a profile of a new coin related website CoinSociety.com which seeks to offer a transparent coin price guide from online transactions.

And now for some notable auctions. First, the key date of the Liberty Nickel series in near gem condition. It’s the 1885 Liberty Nickel PCGS MS64 with CAC sticker. The same seller also has a high grade 1886 Liberty Nickel ending soon.

The 1995 Civil War Battlefields Gold and Silver 6 Coin Set. The obverse designs for this commemorative coin program were created by a private sector artist known for his depictions of battle scenes.

Proof Platinum Eagles seem to be gaining some popularity following the announcement of the upcoming 2009 coin. Here’s the 2004-W Proof $100 Platinum Eagle in the original US Mint packaging.
