December 11, 2009: 2009 Proof Platinum Eagle Sold Out, Coin Grading Standards, Gold and Inflation

We are back to bring you another round up of some of the most interesting and notable articles about coins and coin collecting from around the web! First, the sales end date has been announced for the US Mint’s 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin. Also, the 2009 Proof Platinum Eagle sells out, Louis Braille Commemorative coin sales end, changing coin grading standards, America’s currency, two articles on gold, the coin market, coin auction results, and notable auctions. The US Mint has announced that sales of the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle will end on December 31, 2009. Here’s a post regarding the announcement on Mint News Blog, which includes a time line of the UHR from initial announcement through the projected end of sales.

The 2009 Proof Platinum Eagle has now sold out. Orders continue to be accepted on a waiting list basis.

In one final piece of US Mint related news, sales of the Louis Braille Silver Dollar will end today. As of the last reporting period, the US Mint had sold 217,874 coins, representing 54.5% of the maximum authorized mintage.

Continuing the holiday tradition, there have been many reports anonymous donors dropping gold coins into Salvation Army kettles. Here’s a report of gold coins donated in Denver including a 1902 $20 Liberty Gold Coin and 1979 Gold Krugerrand.

Some of the highlights of the recently completed Heritage Auctions Houston U.S. Coin Sale, which was dominated by gold.
