January 11, 2010: Mint News Blog Survey, FUN Convention Recap, Million Dollar Coins

We’re here to bring you a round up of the latest articles and stories on coin collecting from around the internet! First, the results from a survey on US Mint products and coins from last year. The first installment of results of the Mint News Blog Survey. This post explores the favorite 2009 US Mint products and the biggest disappointment of 2009.

The next US Mint product to be released will be the Northern Mariana Islands Quarter First Day Cover, available on January 12.

A preview of the United States Mint’s 2010 Commemorative Coins, including new images for the 2010 American Veterans Disabled for Life Silver Dollar.

As covered in the final update from last week, three coins sold for more than one million dollars at Heritage’s January 2010 FUN U.S. Coin Auction. The Heritage Blog recaps past auctions where they have sold multiple million dollar coins.

The Legend Numismatics Market Report following the 2010 FUN show, where they bought and placed the 1927-D Saint Gaudens Double Eagle.

PCGS has launched the Million Dollar Coin Club. It is a free reference guide for coins that have sold for $1 million or more at auction, or would sell for that amount if they were offered. There are currently 210 US coins included in the club.

NGC announces the 2009 Registry Award Winners from the 50,000 sets registered on the Collector’s Society website.

Some background on the 1936 Canadian “Dot” Cent, which recently sold for $402,500 at auction, along with information on some of the other “dot” coins rom the same year.

And now for some notable auctions. First,the 2008-W Proof Jackson’s Liberty Gold Proof Coin. This coin seems to enjoy the highest premium of the sold out First Spouse Gold coins.

Next, six unopened bags of Susan B. Anthony Dollars. The bags contain 100 uncirculated coins each for 1979 and 1980 P, D, and S.

Last, the 2008-W Uncirculated Gold Buffalo 4 Coin Set, which continues to be in strong demand.

  1. I agree on the fun component, because passion without a sense of fun can cause an organization to take itself too seriously on its “mission” or “goal” and put itself ahead of its customers
