January 13, 2010: 2009 Lincoln Cent Mintage, Coin of the Year Award Winners, Rare Coin Index Performance

We’re back with another round up of coin collecting news and articles from all over the internet! First, final mintages are available for all of the 2009 Lincoln Cent designs. Also, the upcoming 2010 Lincoln Cent release date and launch ceremony, US Mint sales figures, America the Beautiful Quarter designs, Coin of the Year award winners, rare coin index performance, one for the wastebasket, gold coins for retirement accounts, hard to find clad coinage, and notable auctions. The 2009 Lincoln Cent final mintages are available for all four designs. The 2009-P “Presidency” Lincoln Cent has a mintage of just 129,600,000, the lowest for an individual one cent coin issued for circulation since 1955.

An article from a Springfield, Illinois newspaper which discusses the design featuring 18 bound wheat stalks that was almost used for the 2010 Lincoln Penny. The available details for the February 11 launch ceremony are also provided.

The latest US Mint sales report from Coin Update News. New to the report is the Zachary Taylor Dollar Coin Cover. Gold coins saw sales bump higher from the prior week.

Is 2010 the year of waiting? Collectors are still waiting for the designs and release dates for America the Beautiful Quarters.

The Coin of the Year Award goes to Latvia for a 20 lati gold coin issued for the 15th anniversary of the renewal of the lats currency. The People’s Choice Award went to Hungary, marking the third time they have won the award.

An index of rare coins selected and tracked by Coin World recorded a loss of 7.9% for 2009. The copper coins in the index performed strongly, but were offset by declines in silver and gold coins.

An interesting case study in a scarce low mintage coin that has recently seen a jump in price at auction. It’s the 1883-O Gold Eagle with an original mintage of 800.

A collector might have found a copper-core 1943 cent, but he tossed it in the wastebasket since no one seemed interested in it.

NGC and Entrust will be providing a free webinar to provide educational information about buying bullion coins in an IRA or 401(K).  It will cover eligible coins, the process for buying coins, and IRS requirements.

And now for some notable auctions. First, here are the auction for 50 roll boxes of the low mintage 2009 “Presidency” Lincoln Cent.

A “lifetime gold coin collection” that consists of 88 $1 Gold Coins. There is a scan of the obverse and reverse of each coin included in the lot.

Last, the key date 1893-S Morgan Dollar graded PCGS XF45 in an old green holder.
