Gold PhilharmonicWelcome back to Coin Update!

We’re back to bring you a final round up of coin collecting news and articles to wrap up the week. First, details on the design unveiling ceremony for the new America the Beautiful Quarters series. Also, more price increases at the US Mint, interview with Q. David Bowers, the story behind a recent NGC submission, Gold Philharmonic demand,  registry collection of Peace Dollars, history of the Morgan Silver Dollar, and notable auctions. On to the links…

Final details for the America the Beautiful Quarters design unveiling ceremony have been provided. Although it will be a media-only event, a live webcast of the ceremony will be available at a new government website for the coin series.

There is another round of price increases for United States Mint products. These increases reach some of the US Mint’s lowest priced products.

The latest Coingrader Capsule provides an interview with Q. David Bowers on internet coin buying.

An examination of the many changes that occurred between 1834 and 1844, with great impact to gold coinage of the era.

The story behind an 1805 Half Eagle recently graded MS 63 by NGC. The coin was given to its owner when he was an eight month old baby. The older lady who gave it to him had received it about 90 years before, when she was a young girl.

Sales of the Austrian Mint’s Gold Philharmonic bullion coins have dropped an astounding 80% this year. According to the Austrian Mint, business has returned to normal after the “hectic, panic demand” of the past few years.

What’s the best performing metal so far during 2010? It’s nickel, which is showing a 23% gain for the year, following a 58% gain last year.

An article about collecting the Peace Dollar series that begins with some thoughts on the dramatic changes in numismatics over the past fifty years.

Another interesting read published on Numismaster, which provides the history of the Morgan Silver Dollar series through newspapers, magazines, and government documents.

And now for some notable auctions. First, here is the rare “Cheerios” Sacagawea Dollar and Lincoln Cent Set, still affixed to the original holder.

The classic 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent graded PCGS MS65RD, up for auction with no reserve.

Last, a complete collection of all 50 State Quarters First Day Coin Covers. (The US Mint doesn’t seem to have plans to offer First Day Covers for the upcoming America the Beautiful Quarters.)

On a final note, I wanted to mention that today March 19, 2010 is my son Jason’s second birthday! He received several coins from his parents, along with the obligatory toys.

Happy Birthday Jason!

    Happy Birthday Jason!!
Since we share a birthday,(1961 for me), let me make a suggestion. Since you were in 2008, and conceived in 2007, ask your Dad for a 2008 American Silver Eagle with the reverse of 2007 for your birthday!!
