We’re back with one more round up of coin collecting news and articles before the weekend break! The US Mint debuts the first annual America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set. Also, the leading 2011 Native American Dollar design candidate, Coingrader Capsule, 1916 Double Die Buffalo Nickel, two articles on First Spouse Gold Coins, counterfeit detection, news from NGC and PCGS, the first gold vending machine, and notable auctions. On to the links…

The US Mint began sales of the 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set yesterday. For the first time, all five of this year’s quarters are available to collectors.

The CFA and CCAC both supported the same 2011 Native American Dollar design candidate, which depicts two hands exchanging a peace pipe.

The latest Coingrader Capsule presents the results of an attempt to crossover several ANACS graded Morgan Dollars to PCGS holders.

A closer look at the 1916 Double Die Obverse Buffalo Nickel. One of the finest certified examples is included in Heritage’s Long Beach Coin Auction.

The prices for First Spouse Gold Coins were increased to their highest levels ever, following the recent upswing in gold. The US Mint’s prices are now more than 80% higher than when the series debuted in 2007.

On a related note, here’s a Numismatic News Viewpoint, which states the case for the Martin Van Buren’s Liberty $10 Gold Coins as a potential winner.

The ANA begins their “Destination Education” program in August with an educational seminar “Augustus Saint-Gaudens: The Renaissance of American Coinage” held at the Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site.

After previously showcasing more obvious counterfeit coins, NGC’s counterfeit detection column showcases a “superfake” 1884-S Morgan Dollar. This is a more deceptive fake that could fool professionals and advanced collectors.

NGC has introduced a new metallurgic analysis service. The metal composition of pattern, essay, trail, mint errors, tokens, and medals will be determined and listed on the holder.

PCGS has opened an office in Paris, France, physically establishing the grading service in Europe.

With some fortuitous timing, the first gold vending machine has been installed in Abu Dhabi’s Emirates Palace hotel.

And now for some notable auctions. First, an attractively toned 1936-D California-Pacific Exposition “San Diego” Half Dollar graded PCGS MS66. This is one of several nicely toned classic silver commemorative coins offered by the same seller.

To go with one of today’s articles, here’s the uncirculated version of the 2008 W Van Buren’s Liberty $10 Gold Coin graded NGC MS 70.

Last, one of the those old small ANACS holders containing an 1881-CC Morgan Dollar graded MS65.

That’s it for this update. Have a great weekend!
