May 21, 2010: 1794 Dollar Sets World Record, 5 Star Generals Commemoratives, US Mint Bullion Sales

We’re back with one more round up of coin collecting news and articles to take you into the weekend! First, there’s a new world record for the world’s most valuable coin, following the sale of a 1794 Silver Dollar. Also, America the Beautiful Quarter bags and rolls, Franklin Pierce, Whitman Coin Expo, US Mint bullion sales, platinum and palladium, historic mint restored and reopened, world coin auction highlights, 5 Star Generals commemorative coin legislation, and notable auctions. A 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar, believed to be the first silver dollar struck by the United States Mint, has sold for $7.85 million, setting a new world record.

Yesterday, the US Mint held the launch ceremony for the Franklin Pierce Dollar. Here’s an article which covers the ceremony and provides a broader view of Franklin Pierce and his Presidency.

US Mint bullion sales reached nearly $85 million in the past week, as authorized purchasers snapped up coins. The Numismaster article also includes a listing of the US Mint’s current authorized purchasers.

Amidst the pull back in gold and silver, platinum and palladium prices have plunged. Palladium measured its biggest two day drop in twelve years and platinum is down more than 14% for the month.

The Jacob Perkins Printing and Engraving building in Massachusetts has been restored and will reopen this weekend. According to the article, this building housed the first mint in Massachusetts, which printed currency for the state and other parts of New England. I also happened across this blog, which showcases the restoration work.

Last, the low mintage 1912-S Liberty Nickel graded PCGS MS63 in an old rattler holder.
