July 31, 2010: 2010 Platinum Eagle, Coin Designs Reviewed, Willow Tree Coinage

We’re here to bring you another round up of recent coin collecting news and articles from around the internet! First, the design for the proof 2010 Platinum Eagle featuring the theme “To Establish Justice” has been revealed by the US Mint. Also, gold and silver prices, designs reviewed for upcoming First Spouse Gold Coins and Presidential Dollars, Blue Ike toning, 1855 Kellogg & Co. $50 Gold, willow tree coinage, modern key date coins, and notable auctions. Even though an official announcement still hasn’t been made, the reverse design for the 2010 Proof Platinum Eagle was recently revealed.

With the prices of gold and silver up about 300% each in the last decade, are they still worth buying today? Patrick Heller provides his thoughts.

The CCAC recently reviewed design candidates for 2011 First Spouse Gold Coins and 2012 Presidential Dollars. They were highly critical of the designs provided by the US Mint and only issued a recommendation for one of the eight coins reviewed.

The same designs were also recently reviewed by the Commission of Fine Arts. Although they did have some criticisms, they were not nearly as harsh. Here’s Coin Update News on the CFA’s recommendations for 2012 Presidential Dollars.

Some tips from the PCGS Blog on how to research a coin before you buy or sell.

NCS discusses the type of toning that can develop on “Blue Ikes,” the 40% silver Eisenhower Dollars issued by the US Mint from 1971 to 1974.

A previously unknown example of the 1855 Kellogg & Co. $50 Gold Piece will be included in Heritage’s upcoming ANA auction. The article includes a listing of the 14 known examples of this rarity.

Although there doesn’t seem to be anything about coins in the magazine, Forbes 2010 Investment Guide features a picture of Missing Edge Lettering Presidential Dollars on the cover.

And now for some notable auctions. First, here’s a recent coin with a low mintage that I think is underrated, the uncirculated version of the 2000 Leif Ericson coin.

Next, an example of the 1983 “No S” Dime graded NGC PF 69 Ultra Cameo. This year approximately 3,000 to 3,500 dimes were struck without a mint mark.

Last, the 2008-W Silver Eagle with Reverse of 2007, graded NGC MS 70.
