On to the links…

The US Mint has confirmed the offering of 2010 Proof Gold Eagles and provided the release date of October 7, 2010. Also of note, there will be no ordering limits imposed.

Much closer on the horizon will be the release of the Grand Canyon National Park Quarter bags and rolls. The product offering will coincide with the circulation release date of September 20, with a launch ceremony held the following day.

Even though he describes it as “among the least interesting elements” of coin imagery, David W. Lange provides a rather fascinating article on the history of lettering on US coinage.

Ken Potter reports on a missing edge lettering James Buchanan Presidential Dollar discovered by a Florida collector. So far, it is the only one reported.

An interesting observation from Dave Harper. Yesterday, he happened to check the price of silver and find it at $20.67 per ounce, which was the official price of gold in the United States until 1934.

Two recent rare coin market reports from Vic Bozarth of Bozarth Numismatics and John Feigenbaum of David Lawrence Rare Coins.

Numismaster recounts some of the early public criticism of Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty Half Dollar design. Does the eagle on the reverse look like a turkey?

Sales of the Gold Philharmonic from the Austrian Mint are down 41% for the year to date, at 468,507 ounces.

The Wall Street Journal publishes The 10 Biggest Myths About Gold. The list starts with the myth “Gold is overvalued.”

With gold at an all time high, it’s in the news a lot. Here’s one more article about the upcoming hearing held by Congressman Anthony Weiner on “TV Gold Dealers.”

And now for some notable auctions. First, an 11 cent piece created when a 1981 Lincoln cent was struck on a 1981 Roosevelt Dime. The coin is authenticated by PCGS and graded MS63.

Next, the enormous 1995-1996 Olympic Commemorative Coin Set, including all 32 gold and silver coins across proof and uncirculated versions.

Last, the Ultimate Buffalo Collection, which includes 11 different coins which have featured a buffalo in the design from 1938 to 2006.

That’s it for this week. Have a great weekend!
