We’re back for one more round up of coin collecting news and articles before the weekend. First, the debut of the long awaited 2010 Proof American Gold Eagles from the United States Mint. Yesterday, the United States Mint began sales of the 2010 Proof Gold Eagles. Following last year’s cancellation and in light of the recent record gold prices, it will be interesting to see the initial sales figures next week.
Krause Publications has announced the nominees for the 2011 Coin of the Year. U.S. Coins appearing on the list include the 2009 Ultra High Relief Saint Gaudens Double Eagle, 2009 “Formative Years” Lincoln Cent, 2009 Sacagawea Dollar, Puerto Rico Quarter, and Louis Braille Silver Dollar.
USA Today has an article on the difficulty of finding National Park Quarters through the traditional channels. Quote from the article: “It’s really a shame because the whole idea is a circulating commemorative that you could get at face value.”
In Canada, a Senate committee continues to study the impacts of eliminating the penny. Most of the testimony cited doesn’t seem too opposed to the idea.
On a related note, here are the latest US Mint circulating coin production figures, which indicate more than 3 billion Lincoln Cents have been struck for the year to date.

And now for some notable auctions. First, a complete collection of 1986-2008 Proof Silver Eagles graded NGC PF 69 Ultra Cameo, ahead of the release of the 2010-dated coin.
This is interesting. Here are two vintage coin banks from a Texas unclaimed property auction, which contain unknown silver quarters, silver dimes, nickels, and cents.
Last, the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold coin in top grade NGC MS 70 PL. The coins designated as “proof like” have commanded a premium above other examples.
