April 9, 2010: 2010 Presidential Dollars, 2009 Gold Eagle Mintage, Coin Roll Searching

We’re back with one more round up of coin collecting news to finish the week! First, the upcoming 2010 Presidential Dollar Uncirculated Coin Set, which is expected to be a strong seller. Also, 2009 Gold Eagle mintage, thoughts on half dollars, coin crime alert, price of gold, recommendations for roll searching, courses at the ANA Summer Seminar instructed by NGC experts, PCGS Photograde Online expanded, and notable auctions. Next week, the US Mint will release the 2010 Presidential Dollar Uncirculated Set, which will contain satin finish versions of the 2010-P & D Abraham Lincoln Presidential Dollars.

The mintages have been finalized for the 2009 American Gold Eagle bullion coins. The one ounce coin had a final mintage of 1,493,000.

Dave Harper with some thoughts about half dollars and the US Mint’s current practice of minting just enough Kennedy Half Dollars to sell to collectors in numismatic bags and rolls.

A coin dealer from Concord, Massachusetts has reported the theft of coins worth $500,000. The coins were taken from his parked car while he went into a store at a plaza. CoinLink has a list of coins stolen and information on how to contact the detective in charge of the case.

Although gold is still below its all time high in dollar terms, the price just hit an all time high in British pounds and euros.

An unusual item that will be sold by Heritage at the upcoming CSNS coin auction- a 1913 Buffalo Nickel Struck on a Dime Planchet graded MS 66 by NGC.

There will be several courses at the ANA Summar Seminar that are instructed by professional numismatists from NGC.

PCGS Photograde has been expanded once again. A new application for the iPad has also been released.

And now for some notable auctions. First, the 2008 Andrew Jackson’s Liberty $10 Gold Coin NGC PF 70 Ultra Cameo. This has been one of the most popular coins of the First Spouse Gold Coin series.

Next, a 1912 Matte Proof Lincoln Cent graded NGC PF 66 RD.

Last an interesting New Jersey State Quarter Error. The coin was triple struck with the second and third strikes 65% and 85% off center. Because the coin is 1/3 inch high, it does not fit in a PCGS holder, but includes a grading tag.
