Coin Update NewsWelcome to Coin Update!

We’re back for another round up of coin collecting news and articles from around the web. First, an announcement about a new section of Coin Update! Also, coin investing and speculation, the latest on the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin, Liberty Dollar ceases operations, the Denver Mint, World’s Fair of Money announcements, an exceptional collection of Barber Quarters, low mintage proof gold, and notable auctions. On to the links…

Before going into today’s links, I wanted to make an announcement. I have added a new section to the site known as Coin Update News. This section will feature expanded news coverage on coins, with a focus on articles contributed by coin collectors and dealers. You can read more of the plans for the new section over on Mint News Blog. If you are interesting in contributing articles or news for the site, please contact me.

Here’s an article that I wrote for Coin Update News on coin investing and speculation, specifically examining the factors which play a role in the secondary market price appreciation for US Mint products.

After the US Mint raised the household ordering limit from one coin to ten, sales of the 2009 Ultra High Rlief Double Eagle jumped by more than 300% for the past week.

More on the UHR Double Eagle. Apparently there was quite a run on the coins at the US Mint’s booth at the World’s Fair of Money. Dealers were even paying a $60 bounty for the coins.

The makers of the alternative currency known as the Liberty Dollar have ceased operations following an announcement by the owner on August 1.

According to this article, many of coins produced at the Denver Mint come from rolls of metal manufactured in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Some information about tours of the Denver Mint is also mentioned. They offer guided tours, as opposed to the self guided tours at the Philadelphia Mint.

A recap of some of the announcements that took pace at the ANA World’s Fair of Money.

Heritage recently offered the Steven Buckor collection of Barber Quarters. This article from Coin Values Online presents some interesting perspectives on the impact that a sale of such an exceptional collection can have on the sales prices for the individual coins.

A look at a proof gold coin with a mintage of only 20 pieces on the Heritage Blog.

And now for some notable auctions. First, a top graded 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle with the PL designation for “proof like”.

A 1999-D Delaware Quarter Rotated Dies Mint Error. Back in 1999, I actually found one of these in pocket change.

Last, a set that continues to drive high demand, the 2008-W Uncirculated Gold Buffalo 4 Coin Set in original US mint packaging.

That’s it for today. Have a great evening!

    Hello.

I like the information on this site, but you have an error. Cedar Rapids is not in Ohio. It is in Iowa.
