August 23, 2010: Direct Ship Presidential Dollars, 1856-O Double Eagle, World Coin Issues

Welcome back to Coin Update!

We hope you enjoyed the weekend. Now it’s time for another round up of coin collecting news and articles from around the internet! First, expanded options for the US Mint’s Direct Ship Program include three recent Presidential Dollar issues. Also, new Coingrader Capsule, Boston ANA convention auction recap, 1856-O Liberty Double Eagle, collecting numismatic reference books, Carson City Mint coin show, new $100 bill security features, new world coin issues, and notable auctions. On to the links…

The US Mint has expanded the options available through their Circulating $1 Coin Direct Ship Program, adding the Presidential Dollars featuring John Tyler, James K. Polk, and Zachary Taylor. These may be acquired through the program in 250-coin boxes at face value.

The latest Coingrader Capsule column provides an example of a Deep Mirror Proof Like Morgan Dollar that “Did Not Cross” from NGC to PCGS.

Coin Values Online has a recap of the auctions before and during the Boston ANA Convention. The most surprising result was the $109,250 realized for a 1944 Walking Liberty Half Dollar graded PCGS MS68. While not a rare issue, this coin ranks as the single finest Walking Liberty Half Dollar certified by PCGS.

A recently discovered 1856-O Liberty Double Eagle will be offered by Heritage at the September Long Beach auction. The discovery was the subject of a front page Coin World article and has been graded NGC XF45+.

An article on Numismaster about collecting numismatic reference books, coin holders, albums, and original packaging and paperwork from classic commemorative coins.

A new coin story from Numistories about Big Joe’s Little Box of Coins.

Information on the upcoming Carson City Mint Coin Show at the Nevada State Museum. The Historic Coin Press No. 1 will be striking Pony Express Commemorative Medallions.

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing has released a new video to demonstrate the security features of the new $100 bill. View the video and some background at Coin Collector’s Blog.

A few recent and upcoming world coin issues. From the Royal British Mint, the first three issues of the London 2012 Gold Series, with each coin depicting an Olympic sport paired with a Roman god. From the Perth Mint, the 2011 Silver Koala, which features a new design of an adult and young koala in a tree.

And now for some notable auctions. First, a lot of 25 1982 George Washington Commemorative Half Dollars in a sealed mailing box. This issue represented the beginning of modern commemorative coins.

Next, a 1976 Proof Eisenhower Dollar in a Collector’s Universe holder signed by Gerald Ford. Previously, I have seen some of the 1976 bicentennial coins in holders signed by the designers, but this is the first time I have seen one signed by a former President.

Last, the 2008-W Van Buren’s Liberty $10 Gold Coin featuring the design of the Liberty Seated Dime. The next and final issue of the “Liberty subset” will be released in just a few weeks.

That’s it for today. Have a great evening!
