August 31, 2010: James Buchanan’s Liberty Gold Coin, Duckor Barber Half Dollars, Gold Recall Melting

We’re back with another round up of coin collecting news and articles from around the internet! First, the upcoming release of the James Buchanan’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin. Also, the latest US Mint sales report, Carson City Mint coin show, the Duckor collection of Barber Half Dollars, set building ideas, Lincoln Peace Medal struck in gold, finest known 1921-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar, bullish forecasts for gold, recalled gold coins melted, and notable auctions. Later this week, the US Mint will release the eagerly awaited Buchanan’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin. Featuring Christian Gobrecht’s design for the Liberty Quarter Eagle on the obverse, the coin will complete the four coin “Liberty Subset” of the broader series.

The latest report of US Mint numismatic product sales includes a relatively strong debut for the 2010 Silver Proof Set, although numbers were still below last year’s figures. Meanwhile, the 2010 Proof Gold Buffalo recorded its strongest week since the start of sales.

Local coverage of the Carson City Mint coin show held last week that ends with a nice quote, “This is a place where everyone comes together to learn and have fun.”

Steven Roach for Coin Values Online does some analysis on the Steven Duckor collection of Barber Half Dollars recently sold at auction.

One of the highlights from the Stack’s Americana Sales, a unique gold Lincoln Peace Medal from the Eliasberg collection. It has a diameter of 76.1 mm and the weight of more than eight double eagles.

Pinnacle Rarities has announced that they sold the finest known 1921-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar graded PCGS MS66. Although not the lowest mintage coin of the series, it is the least available in uncirculated grades.

An article from Bloomberg on the bullish forecasts for gold. George Soros calls gold the “ultimate asset bubble” and stated that buying at the start of the bubble is “rational.”

Coin Collector’s Blog with a recommendation for coins offered by television shopping channels or cable advertisements: just say NO!

A story from Abu Dhabi about a woman tricked into trying to exchange USD $1 million notes at a bank for 30 per cent of their value. The article, published on a foreign site, specifically mentions that the novelty bills “do not have a value of US $1M.”

David L. Ganz writes about the Presidential proclamation to recall gold coins in circulation. A table is included showing the coins recalled and melted.

And now for some notable auctions. First, an auction for a lot of six modern commemorative coins, which happens to include the 2001 Buffalo Silver Dollar 2 coin set.

The first and most affordable coin of the “Liberty Subset”, here are the auctions for the Thomas Jefferson’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coins featuring the design of the Draped Bust Half Cent.

Last, a Kennedy Half Dollar struck on a nickel planchet. The error coin is certified by NGC and graded MS 64.
