December 21, 2010: Palladium Eagle Coins, Edmund Moy Resigns, Gold Vending Machine

We’re back following a brief break, for another round up of coin collecting news and articles from around the internet! First, an early look at Adolph A. Weinman’s designs that will be used for the US Mint’s palladium bullion series. Also, Edmund Moy resigns and takes a job in the private sector, Ireland’s new collector coin series, the Granite Lady, gold vending machines, Fred Weinberg interview, paper money exhibit, Susan B. Here’s a look at the obverse and reverse designs for the American Palladium Eagles. The new bullion and collector series would be issued within one year of the submission of a marketing study to confirm that demand for the coins exists.

Edmund Moy, the Director of the United States Mint has resigned effective January 9, 2011. His new job will be Vice President Corporate Infrastructure at L&L Energy.

An interview with the Central Bank of Ireland coin department head of marketing, focusing on the new collector series issued as a tribute to the Percy Metcalfe “Barnyard” coins.

A bit of history on the San Francisco Old Mint or “Granite Lady.” Plans are underway to make the structure a museum dedicated to the history of San Francisco.

The first gold vending machine has opened in the United States. The “Gold to Go” machine is at the Town Center Mall in Boca Raton, Florida.

An exhibition at Princeton University on the art of paper money is on view through January 2. Included in the exhibition is the first public display of a banknote engraving of a grouse by John James Audubon.

Part Two of  “a cautionary tale” on the Susan B. Anthony Dollar. The author cites the failure to discontinue the production of paper dollars as the main stumbling block to achieving significant circulation.

An anonymous donor dropped a 1928 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle in a Salvation Army kettle. For the past six years, gold double eagles have been dropped into kettles wrapped in a note, “In loving memory of Mimi.”

NGC has announced special labels for America the Beautiful 5 oz Silver Quarters. The 5 ounce coins will be encapsulated in NGC Oversize holders with large format labels containing a different image for each site.

Doug Winter discusses proof only gold coins, ahead of the auction of auction of some Type Three Proof Liberty Double Eagles in the upcoming 2011 FUN auction.

And now for some notable auctions. Here are two separate auctions for three out of the four coins of the First Spouse Gold Coin Liberty Subset. The uncirculated set is missing the Van Buren’s Liberty, while the proof set is missing the Jackson’s Liberty.

Next, an “11 cent piece”, or a 1998 Lincoln Cent Struck on a Dime.

Last, a no motto 1908 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle graded PCGS MS66+ in Secure Plus holder.
