December 27, 2010: 2011 Proof Platinum Eagle, Annual Set Release Dates, Coin Set Recommendations

We’re here to bring you another round up of the latest coin collecting news and articles from around the internet! First, a look at the design candidates for the 2011 Proof American Platinum Eagle, which were recently reviewed by the CFA. Also, release dates for the US Mint’s 2011 annual sets, Stacks-Bowers and Merena merger, coin dealer interview, a delay for the new 5p and 10p coins, America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin images, coin investment index performance, recommendations for U.S. coin collections, and notable auctions. The Commission of Fine Arts recently reviewed the nine design candidates provided by the United States Mint for the 2011 Proof Platinum Eagle. For theme for the third year of the six year design series is “To Insure Domestic Tranquility.”

The US Mint has announced the release dates for the 2011 Proof Set, 2011 Silver Proof Set, and 2011 Mint Set. The release dates will take place in January and February, spaced two weeks apart. The 2010-dated sets are expected to remain available until the end of next year.

The new composition 5p and 10p UK coins, which are also 0.2 mm thicker than existing coins, have been delayed to avoid problems with vending machines and parking meters.

An article about a coin collection composed of 582 found coins. Each coin was placed in an envelope indicating the date and place the coin was found and what was happening that day.

Although the authorized purchasers don’t seem to have started public sales yet, APMEX has delivered the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins to customers who ordered prior to the halt/relaunch of the program. Coin Values Online provides performance figures for the “Classic U.S. Rarities Key-Date Investment Index” used by the Wall Street Journal for their investment scorecard. The index recorded a gain of 10.3% for 2010.
