December 31, 2010: Annual Coin Survey, Silver Commemorative Coins, Precious Metals Prices

Welcome to Coin Update!

We have one more round up of coin collecting news and articles for the year 2010! First, a review of some surprisingly accurate coin related predictions from one year ago, leading into the latest annual Mint News Blog survey. Also, a recap of the 2010 Proof Silver Eagle, Silver Pandas, Silver Britannia coins, a display of vividly toned silver commemoratives, low denomination coins phased out in India, Coingrader Capsule, precious metals performance, and notable auctions. One year ago, Mint News Blog held a survey which allowed readers to make some predictions about the events of 2010. Revisiting the survey finds that many of predictions were accurate, including some of the “bold predictions” offered by readers.

A recap of the background, release, and sell out of the 2010 Proof Silver Eagle. The offering was full of twists and turns, and went far from smoothly for the US Mint.

NGC will be displaying a group of vividly toned silver commemorative coins at the FUN convention. See the article for pictures of some of the coins.

In India, the government announced that the 25 paise denomination will be phased out from June 30, 2011.

A small coin collection stolen in 1976 was returned to its rightful owner 34 years later with an anonymous note of apology.

A new edition of Coin Grader Capsule is available dealing with doctored coins.

Precious metals had another impressive year. The price of gold was up 27.74%, silver was up 80.28%, platinum was up 18.08%, and palladium was up 96.77%

And now for some notable auctions. First, a satin finish 2008-P Martin Van Buren Presidential Dollar with missing edge lettering. The error coin is authenticated by NGC and graded MS 67.

Next, a lot of 16 assorted U.S. Commemorative Silver Dollars, which includes a variety of issues throughout the mid 1990′s.

Last, a nearly complete set of 1909-1971 Lincoln Cents in an old National Coin Album. Large sized images of each page of the album are included.
