December 6, 2010: ATB Silver Coins Delayed, WWI Commemorative Coins, Gold and Silver Bullion

Welcome to Coin Update!

We’re back for more coin collecting news and articles from around the internet! Well, today was supposed to the launch date for the long awaited America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins, but the situation didn’t quite work out as planned. The first articles deal with the anticipated release (and presale) of the coins, followed by articles on the delayed release due to the high premiums being charged for these bullion products. Also, new $100 bills quarantined, Heritage FUN Platinum Night auction, coin theft case update, World War I commemoratives, coin grading, YN competition, Gold and Silver Eagle bullion quantities, and notable auctions. On to the links…

This Coin Update News article was written after one of the Mint’s primary distributors started offering 5 coin sets of the ATB silver coins for almost double the market price of the silver content. A related Mint News Blog article opts to wait for the numismatic versions of the coins rather than paying the high premiums.

Late today, the US Mint announced the delayed release of the silver bullion coin series. What options does the US Mint legally have to broadly release the coin to the pubic in a reasonable fashion?

A total of $110 billion worth of the newly designed $100 bills have been quarantined. More than 30% of these bills are unusable due to a creasing problem, which occurred during production.

Heritage provides some highlights for the Platinum Night FUN auction in January 2011.

Nine presidential pardons were announced. One possibly of note to coin collectors was for “coin mutilation.”

Details reported on the theft and recovery of dealer Julian Leidman’s multi million dollar inventory of coins and currency following the 2009 Coinfest show.

The ANA board of governors supports commemorative coins struck by the US Mint in 2017 to honor World War I soldiers.

From PCGS‘s ongoing article series on the evolution of the grading system is the 70 point numerical  scale developed by William Sheldon.

Do you know any young numismatists? They can enter for the PNG 2011 YN Scholarship competition. The winner will receive airfare, tuition, meals, and accommodations for the ANA Summer Seminar.

Legislation that is supposed to deal with the composition of circulating coinage, seems to have ominous implications for the supply of US Mint gold and silver bullion coins.

And now for some notable auctions. First, an older “bullion” rarity, the 1999-W $10 Gold Eagle struck with unfinished proof dies, graded PCGS MS69.

The 1984 Olympic $10 Gold Coin was issued in five different versions. This included proof  Philadelphia, Denver, San Fransisco minted coins, plus proof and uncirculated West Point minted coins.

Last, the key date 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent PCGS MS66RD. This seller just keep this coin coming.

That’s it for another update. Have a great evening!
