December 9, 2008: Gold Backwardation, 95% Copper 2009 Lincoln Cents, Platinum Sell Outs

We’re back with another round up of coin news from around the internet. First, information on the recent phenomenon of gold backwardation. Also, 2009 copper Lincoln Cents, Proof Platinum Eagle sell outs, NGC combats counterfeiting, a collection of rainbow toned Morgan Dollars, and notable auctions. On to the links…

If you follow gold news closely, you may have been hearing the term “backwardation.” Here’s a nice explanation and analysis of the recent news.

Did you know that there will be a 95% copper 2009 Lincoln Cent minted? An opinion voiced over at Mint News Blog about how these special versions of the coins should be offered.

The pace of sell outs at the US Mint is becoming difficult to keep up with. Today’s sell outs include three of the individual proof Platinum Eagles.

A great piece from Dave Harper who reflects on the lack of attention for the annual US Proof Set due to the proliferation of other products.

NGC now offers an internet accessible database of all coins it certifies. This is targeted at eliminating counterfeit or altered holders and has been in place since October 1, 2008. (As a side note, newly established coin grading firm DGS already does this. It was one of the features I was most impressed with when I mentioned their launch on Coin Update.)

Martin Van Buren’s Liberty First Spouse Gold coins are off to a relatively strong start. Does this signal renewed interest in the series?

Some highlights from Heritage’s recently held auction at the Houston Money Show. You will recall that this auction included coins from Jack Lee’s #1 All Time Finest Set of Lincoln Cents.

An exquisite collection of rainbow toned Morgan Dollars will highlight PCGS’s display at the Florida United Numismatists annual convention.

A nice write up on the 1857 Flying Eagle Cent, an affordable but historically significant type coin.
