February 11, 2009: 2009 Lincoln Penny and Commemorative Tomorrow, Presidential Dollar Pilot Program

2009 Puerto Rico QuarterWelcome to Coin Update!

It’s time for another round up of coin collecting news from around the internet! The biggest news is surrounding the 2009 Lincoln Cent and 2009 Lincoln Commemorative which will both be released tomorrow to mark Lincoln’s 200th birthday. Also, an estimated release schedule for this year’s quarters, an assessment of the program to promote Presidential Dollar use, Mint Error News, coin market reports, and notable auctions. On to the links…

Gold continues on its recent run, moving above $940 per ounce. This marks the highest level in almost seven months.

The US Mint will hold an event at Abraham Lincoln’s Birthplace National Historic Site tomorrow to present the first of the 2009 Lincoln Pennies. The public can also exchange currency for the newly designed pennies.

Tomorrow will also mark the release of the 2009 Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar. It seems that a lot of people think this coin will sell out.

More penny news. A so-called revolution begins against penny use in Concord, Massachusetts.

An estimated release schedule for the 2009 DC & US Territory Quarters, along with some large size coin images.

Susan Headley provides an update on numerous issues and upcoming events related to the US Mint.

An article on Presidential Dollars, which includes some quotes from the US Mint assessing the recently completed four city pilot program to promote the dollar coins. “The formula is for people to have it in their hands. Once they see it regularly in change they will embrace it.”

The article above (incorrectly, I believe) states that President Obama will be on a Presidential Dollar in 2060 based on “speculation” from US Mint officials.  Based on my reading of the Presidential $1 Coin Act, the series ends once all eligible Presidents have been honored at a pace of four per year. The program would not extend into 2060.

The latest edition of Mint Error News is available. Download your copy of issue #26 at MintErrorNews.com.

Following the Long Beach Show, two coin market reports form Laura Sperber and Doug Winter.

And now for some notable auctions. A very interesting Roosevelt Dime Error, described as Obverse Struck Thru Late Capped Die.

Still in strong demand, the 2008-W Proof American Gold Buffalo 4 Coin Set PCGS PR69DCAM.

And last, a big 10 ounce Johnson Matthey Gold Bar.

That’s it for today. Have a great evening!
