February 13, 2009: 2009 Lincoln Cent Availability, 2010 Quarter Information, Presidential Dollar Schedule

2009 Lincoln PennyWelcome to Coin Update!

We’re back with a final round up of coin collecting news to take you into the weekend! First, rising gold and the Perth Mint. Also, the launch ceremony for the 2009 Lincoln Cent and information about trying to find it. Details on the new series of 2010 quarters, Presidential Dollar release schedule, Coin of the Year Awards, the US Mint’s Annual Report, and notable auctions. On to the links…

After rising above the $950 level yesterday, gold is pulling back today. It will mark the first decline in gold in the past four days.

A story in the growth of holdings for the Perth Mint’s gold depository program. Quote from treasurer of the mint’s depository, “What appears to be Mr. Average is asking to buy $10 million of gold.”

Yesterday the first new design for the 2009 Lincoln Penny was launched. The official ceremony took place in Hodgenville, Kentucky. About 1,500 people attended the ceremony and exchanged currently for $5,000 worth of the  new pennies.

Those who were able to attend the ceremony were very lucky. It turns out the new pennies might be hard to obtain- at least for the next few weeks.

The Wall Street Journal Economics Blog dredges up the old penny elimination debate. Included in the article, apparently President Obama said the following while on the campaign trail: “I will seriously consider eliminating the penny as long as we find another place for Lincoln to land.”

The US Mint posts some information on its website about the new 2010 Quarters. But are they called National Parks Quarters or National Sites Quarters?

Also the 2009 Presidential Dollar release dates starting with William Henry Harrison coming on February 19, 2009.

Coverage or the Coin of the Year Awards. The winner was the National Bank of Mongolia for a coin promoting wildlife protection.

A review of Heritage’s January 8 Platinum Night, which included the Top Registry Set of $10 Indian Head Gold  Eagle Coins.

The US Mint recently released their annual report for 2008. Here’s a summary of some of the highlights. You can download the entire report here.

And now for some notable auctions. First, take a look at the incredible prices being paid for the new 2009 Lincoln Cents. In my opinion, these prices are bound to fall within the coming weeks as the coins become easier to obtain.

Anyone looking for the classic, here’s a 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent NGC MS 64 RD with CAC sticker.

And last, here’s a Jefferson Nickel with some fantastic rainbow toning.

Have a great weekend!

I live in Niagra Falls New YOrk. My 2 sons and I have been collecting the presidential coins since day one. Problem is, everytime we go to a local bank this year, they don’t have the Harrison coins and tell me that they never received any. What gives? This is a great promotion and teaches children the value of money and learn about the different products that are collectibles. Please help.

I’ve heard similar reports from many people trying to find 2009 Presidential Dollars or any 2009 coins at banks.

Because of the economy, old coinage is reentering circulation, delaying the distribution of new coinage. In many cases banks are no longer able to order unmixed quantities of new coins like they had in the past.

The US Mint does sell rolls of Presidential Dollars, $25 rolls are $35.95, but WHH is already sold out.

Your best bet might be eBay, where you can pick up one or two coins for $2-$3 each with shipping.

Hope this is useful. Sorry I couldn’t be of greater help.
