February 3, 2010: US Mint Coin Production, British Royal Mint Gold, 2008 Proof Sets

We’re back after a small break with another round up of coin collecting news and articles from around the internet! First, US Mint coin production continues the trend of lower numbers that was established last year. Also US Mint sales report, 50 State Quarters Program, coin composition changes, counterfeit detection seminar, an “oddball” coin collection, proof set values, examining the dollar bill, and notable auctions. The United States Mint has posted the coin production figures through the end of January. Will the Mint produce nickels and dimes in 2010?

President Obama’s proposed 2011 Budget includes a section which seems to open the door to composition changes for coins. “The Budget enables the Department of the Treasury to explore, analyze, and approve new, less expensive materials for all circulating coins based on factors that will result in the highest quality of coin production at the most cost-effective price.”

Last, a complete set of Peace Dollars, including all dates and mint marks from 1921 to 1935. The coins are certified by either PCGS or NGC with all coins except one in mint state grades.
