December 31, 2008: Gold up for 2008, US Mint Sold Out Products, Top 10 Coin List

2008 Proof Silver EagleWelcome to the last Coin Update for 2008!

It’s a final coin collecting news update before I sign off to celebrate the new year! First, gold ends the year with its eighth consecutive annual gain. Also, an examination of the price levels for sold out US Mint products, viewpoint on coin clubs, seigniorage, top ten lists for State Quarters, 2009 coin picks, and coin websites. On to the links…

Gold closes out the year at $880.30 representing a gain of over 5% for 2008. This is actually the eighth consecutive year that gold has posted a gain.

How will gold perform in 2009? Most predictions I have seen find gold higher. Here’s one particularly well written piece that lays out the bullish case for gold.

The pace of sell outs at the US Mint has been dizzying this year, but it has provided some big returns for collectors who purchased the sold out products. Check out the price performance of some 2008 US Mint Sold Out Products.

From a new coin blog that has been putting up some interesting posts, what type of coin collector are you?

An interesting viewpoint piece on the decline of Coin Clubs. The author doesn’t blame the internet, but a lack of membership.

CoinNews finds a video of the US Mint and Washington Metro press conference announcing the placement of dollar coins in ticket vending machines.

Have you ever wondered about how seigniorage works and who benefits? Here’s a recent article on Seeking Alpha discussing it.

The end of the year is a great time for top ten lists. Coin Collector’s Blog provides his list of the Top 10 Quarter Designs from the 50 State Quarters Program.

Susan Headley has a duo of top ten lists. The first provides her Top 10 Coin Picks for 2009. The second provides the Top 10 Coin Websites across different categories. (A big thank you for including Coin Network !)

And now for some notable auctions. First, a look at the current auctions for one of this year’s big winners, the 2008 Proof Silver Eagle.

With 2009 right around the corner, the pre-sales have begun. Here is a pre-sale for 2009 Silver Eagles NGC MS 69 Early Releases.

And last, one of my favorites, the bimetallic Platinum and Gold 2000-W Library of Congress Commemorative in NGC MS 70 and NGC PF 70 Ultra Cameo.

On a final note: Happy New Year!  Thank you to all of the readers of Coin Update and all the best in 2007 2009! (oops!)

  1. Hahaha, I think someone’s been drinking champagne a few hours early. ;) Are you going backward while the rest of us are going forward?

Yup in my rush to finish up, I forgot that years move forward instead of backwards! I’ll fix it with a strike through since its pretty funny.

Thanks again and happy new year!

Have a happy New Year & thanks for Coin Update. On the link for “what type of collector are you” I received a warning it could be a phishing website. I think it is a false warning, but it should be looked into & corrected. I hope everyone has a great 2009.

  4. Ike says:

Hi again. I might have trouble with my phishing filter. Your website also gives me a warning. —lol—

  5. greg says:

  6. I am not sure what a phishing website is, but I assure you that I am not purposefully doing anything mischievous on my site.
